Compiled  q2_logo.gif (7396 bytes)uake II Utils

Updated: February 17, 2000 09:43 PM

Okay..  Started workin' at SGI.  Awesome place, and awesome machines.  For those of you who have access to some of these powerful machines, I have compiled the q2utils, QBSP3, QVIS3, and QRAD3.  These tools are supplied by me, and are UNSUPPORTED from SGI, so email me not SGI ;)

Oh well, got laid off SGI.. too bad.  Perhaps it's for the better.

About the utils:

These are the original versions.  I'm sad to report at this time I cannot provide ArghRad, perhaps in the future.  I still need to talk to G.DeWan and see if he'll allow me to port.  In any case, if anyone has a version of these utils they would like to provide in an SGI version, please email me, and we'll see what we can do.

These have been checked on O2 and OCTANE systems (R5K and R10K CPUs).  They can also be run multi-threaded (see Threads section).  Current speed of utils are about the same on an O2 (R5K 256MBRAM) as my Nt4 PPro200 with 128MB RAM.  The OCTANE (R10K 256MBRAM) is about 2x the speed of the O2.  All are single CPU machines.

Requirements:

An SGI machine with IRIX 6.3 or higher.   Specifically tested were 6.3 on an O2, and 6.4 on an OCTANE.  RAM requirements are probably at least 64MB.

Download

This is as of 5/8/98 a new archive.  The original was a test archive without the optimizations turned on.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

q2utilsSGI.tar.gz (192KB)

If the link doesn't work, just email me, and I can send you the file.

USAGE:

Your base Q2 directory can be just about anywhere.  I prefer $HOME/quake2.  You need a full copy of quake there (you don't need the .exe or .dll from Win95/NT).  Textures also need to be extracted in baseq2/textures (unless someone gives me a modified version of the q2utils with pak support).

Extract the Q2utils archive to your Quake2 dir (it should create a dir called bin).  Put a copy of your .map files into the normal baseq2/maps dir.   Cd to the location of your .map files.

Command template:

{path}/quake2/bin/{util} {options} {mapfile}

Options, et. al. work like they normally do in q2 map compiling.   Enjoy.

THREADS:

Just a little note that threads option will work on SGI.  I've only obtained results for QBSP3 currently (more tomorrow), which with one thread, compiled my map, terraform2.map in 80 seconds on an O2 (32bit) R5K 256MB RAM.

The R10K O2 should do the job in about half the time.  OCTANE (R10K) should be 2x the R10K O2.
